Kayonews-Professional liability insurance is becoming an important consideration for Canadian businesses that provide advice, professional services or specialised expertise. The coverage is also known as Errors and Omissions insurance, or E&O. It can protect a business when a client alleges that an error, omission, negligence or professional mistake caused financial loss. In Canada, coverage requirements can also vary by profession, province and regulator.

For small businesses, the potential cost of a professional liability claim can extend beyond a settlement. Legal defence expenses can also become a major financial burden. A 2026 TD Insurance survey found that nearly one in four Canadian small businesses operated without insurance. The survey also found that almost six in 10 small-business owners had difficulty understanding insurance. This makes understanding professional liability coverage especially important for service-based businesses.

Professional liability insurance generally covers claims connected with the professional services a business provides. Depending on the policy, coverage can respond to allegations involving mistakes, negligence, missed obligations, incorrect advice or other professional errors. The Office of the Superintendent of Financial Institutions defines professional liability as coverage for liability arising from specialised services, including errors and omissions and malpractice.

The cost of professional liability insurance in Canada varies significantly. Factors can include the type of profession, annual revenue, location, experience, claims history, coverage limit and risk level. Market estimates suggest some small businesses may pay roughly C$500 to C$1,500 annually. However, this range should not be treated as a national standard. Higher-risk professions can face substantially different premiums.

Businesses should also understand that professional liability insurance does not replace general liability insurance. Professional liability generally addresses financial losses arising from professional services. Commercial general liability can address different risks, such as third-party bodily injury or property damage. Some Canadian businesses may therefore need both types of coverage. The correct combination depends on the business, contracts, industry and regulatory requirements.

Certain professions may face specific insurance requirements. For example, CPA Ontario requires firms providing public accounting or accounting services to the public to maintain professional liability insurance. From July 2026, CPA Ontario changed the reporting process, requiring firms to report their PLI information annually through the Annual Practitioner Dues filing. Minimum limits also depend on firm size, starting at C$1 million per claim for a one-member firm.

Quebec also has specific professional liability requirements for certain financial-services professionals. The Autorité des marchés financiers requires covered firms, independent partnerships and representatives to maintain valid professional liability insurance. The prescribed limits depend on the business structure. For some smaller firms and representatives, the requirement includes C$500,000 per claim and C$1 million annually.

When comparing professional liability insurance in Canada, businesses should look beyond the headline premium. Check the limit per claim, annual aggregate limit, deductible, exclusions, retroactive date, extended reporting protection and covered professional services. A policy that appears cheaper may provide less protection or contain exclusions that matter to a particular profession. Businesses should also confirm that the policy satisfies any regulator or client contract requirements.

For professionals searching for professional liability insurance Canada 2026, the first step is to identify the risks connected with their actual services. Accountants, consultants, engineers, technology professionals, designers, real estate professionals and other service providers can face different exposures. Businesses should compare quotes from licensed insurers or brokers and review the policy wording before purchasing.

The bottom line is that professional liability insurance can help protect Canadian businesses from the financial consequences of claims involving professional services. There is no single price or coverage level that fits every Canadian business. The appropriate policy depends on the profession, province, revenue, client contracts and potential claim exposure. Before buying coverage, compare limits, deductibles, exclusions and regulatory requirements rather than choosing a policy based only on its advertised price.

This article provides general information and is not insurance, legal or financial advice. Insurance requirements, premiums and policy terms vary by province, profession and insurer. Check current requirements with the relevant Canadian regulator or licensed insurance professional. (*)
